WEDNESDAY NEWS HIT - The race for Detroit mayor got a little bit more crowded Tuesday night when council president Mary Sheffield announced her plans to run for the office.
Following her announcement, she told FOX 2 she plans to lead as mayor much in the same way she has overseen her leadership at the council.
"I did it my way," she said, adding she hopes her own values will act as guiding principles in her bid for the seat. She brought up ensuring that neighborhoods are walkable, making the city safer, building upon its economic growth while keeping housing affordable as some of what she hopes to do.
"I think Detroit is ready for progress, they're ready to move forward, and in a lot of ways, I feel they chose me," said Sheffield.
Sheffield's entrance into the race did not come as much of a surprise, and with nine months to go until the election, she can expect some familiar faces to challenge her for office.
That includes councilmember Fred Durhal II and state Rep. Joe Tate, who have both formed exploratory committees. Saunteel Jenkins, a former president of the council.
Mike Duggan announced earlier this fall he would not be running for reelection. After serving for three terms, Duggan says he will run for Michigan governor as an independent.

Snow, subzero wind chills hit Southeast Michigan Wednesday

That will change over the course of the day with the first flakes falling around early afternoon. By then, metro Detroit temperatures will top out around 35 degrees before tumbling to freezing conditions.
At its heaviest, areas around Detroit could see up to an inch of snow accumulation on the sidewalks. Snow squalls will be at their most likely Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Police say kids staying on porch chose to sleep outside
FOX 2 viewers have been reaching out, asking what happened to those boys who lived on a porch in Detroit. Police are on the case, but the future of the brothers is still unclear.
Neighbors on Detroit's west side grew nervous about two young teens that had been sleeping outside on a porch, using the area to rest.
The plunging temperatures and snowy start to the holidays raised concerns for the well-being of the juveniles. There was no punishment that led to them sleeping on the porch.
Police say the parents tried to get their kids in therapy and everything possible to redirect their path. The parents have been cleared of any potential charges, Meanwhile, the older brother has had past behavioral issues. He has a pending assault and battery case.
Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum readies for West Bloomfield move
Grab your quarters and enter a special space for arcade games, antiques and 'uniques' you can't find anywhere else at Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum.
It is about to move locations to a bigger site in West Bloomfield with nearly triple the square footage. But leaving will be bittersweet, says Jeremy Yagoda.
Jeremy is the son of the late Marvin himself. It has been located in Farmington Hills for over 30 years, housing an eclectic mish-mash of mechanical toys and games that hold a lot of sentimental memories.
Due to a redevelopment project planned for the strip mall — Marvin's was either going to have to close, or move on. After months of searching, they say they found the perfect spot.
