12-year-old convicted of a 2009 murder has chance of freedom

DETROIT (WJBK) - A local crime made national headlines in 2009 when a 24-year-old woman from Davison, Mich. was murdered in Detroit by a 12-year-old.

DeMarco Harris will have his first chance at freedom Friday due to a blended sentence he was given in 2010. Now that Harris is almost 21 years old, his sentence as a juvenile has maxed out.

Harris was convicted of felony murder for the shooting death of 24-year-old Trisha Babcock. She was shot in her car at point-blank range during a robbery in Detroit in August 2009.

Now a judge will revisit this case, deciding if Harris will be sentenced as an adult, which could mean life in prison. But the judge also has the power to release him. 

Trisha Babcock's family will be at the review Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.
