2 women abducted riding bikes at Hamtramck-Detroit border

(WJBK) - Within the past two weeks, authorities have received at least two reports of women being abducted while riding bikes alone near the border of Detroit and Hamtramck.

The latest report is said to have happened Sunday evening around 5 p.m. Hamtramck police only tell us they received the report and it’s under investigation.

The other reported abduction happened on Saturday, September 30.

Two men drove up in a white van stopping at the corner of Milwaukee and Orleans, grabbed a 24-year-old woman riding her bike and sexually assaulted her while driving around, police say.

The area has a lot of industrial buildings also a lot of bike riders to and from work.

While they know there are strength in numbers, the people we spoke with say they still ride alone.

Women in the area say despite these reports they feel safe overall saying they see police patrol routinely.

"There is a fair number I see around anyway," said Lynn Blasey who commutes on her bike. "All these buildings have their own security. I've never felt in danger."

"Every now and then you see a parked car and you are keeping an eye out," said Susanne Bowman. "But so far I’ve been lucky."

A source said Detroit police are treating the two reports of abduction as if they were related and are looking at video near the scene to confirm their suspicions. In the meantime, cyclists we spoke with say they won’t be scared into changing their behavior.

"It's definitely something to keep in mind," Bowman said. "I don't think it's going to stop me from riding my bike to work."
