Driver dies after crashing into building along Woodward in Berkley
BERKLEY, Mich. (WJBK) - A man has died after crashing his car into a building along Woodward Avenue early Tuesday morning in Berkley.
Police are still on scene along Woodward, just south of 12 Mile for the investigation. It's not known yet what made the driver lose control.
The driver was going north on Woodward when he crossed the median into the southbound lanes, crashing into several signs and eventually a medical center. The car crashed into the Cataract Specialty Surgical Center, which is between Catalpa and 12 Mile Road, just after 5:30 a.m.
The 58-year-old driver, of Royal Oak, was rushed to the hospital after being cut out of his Jeep Grand Cherokee. About an hour later police said he had died.
Police say they suspect the driver had a medical episode before the crash. No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported.
Authorities haven't yet given the name of the victim.
A friend of the victim's came to the scene and said the victim had a stroke last year, as well as open heart surgery.
The owner of the medical center says they'll be calling patients to reschedule appointments, as they'll be closed for at least a week to repair the damages.
