Vigil to be held for fallen Officer Glenn Doss

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit Police Chief James Craig say Officer Glenn Doss Jr. has died from the injuries sustained in a shooting last week.

Chief Craig held a press conference outside Detroit Receiving Hospital Sunday afternoon to announce the officer's death, calling Officer Doss an "American Hero."

Chief Craig also thanked Officer Doss's partner Officer Samuel Anderson for his quick thinking to take his injured partner to the hospital.

Doss and other officers were called to the 5500 block of McDougall Wednesday night for reports of a couple arguing and possible shots fired.

When they arrived, a 43-year-old suspect with a gun opened fire on them before they even got out of their patrol car, police said. Thirty bullet casings were found at the scene. Doss was hit twice and rushed to the hospital by his partner.

At the press conference Sunday, Officer Doss's father Officer Glenn Doss Sr. thanked everyone for their prayers for his son and thanked the Mayor and Chief for their support since the shooting.

Officer Doss Jr. was 25 years old and had been with the department for two years. His father is a 19-year veteran of the department.

"I never told to join the police department," his father said. "I never advised him to join the police department. He called me up a couple of years ago and said dad what do I have to do to be in the police. I told him to go to 1301 Third Street and put in an application. Three months later he started the academy and fell in love with the job."

Doss's father says his son had originally been studying therapy and psychology.

"Officer Glenn Doss was everything that's good about the City of Detroit," Mayor Duggan said, noting that Officer Doss left Detroit to go to college, but came back to the city.

Doss was a new father to his son, Eli. 

A vigil for Doss is planned for Monday, January 29 at 4:30 pm at the 7th Precinct.
