Ex-councilman charged in wrong-way double fatal I-275 crash

(WJBK) - A 59-year-old man has been charged in connection with a double fatal car crash that happened in December on I-275. Authorities say the man was driving the wrong way and hit the victims' car head-on. 

Michael Stack, of Wolverine Lake, has been charged with two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death, and one count of Open Intoxicant in his vehicle. The investigation revealed a bottle of alcohol in Stack's car. 

Authorities say Stack was a Wolverine Lake Village Councilman at the time of the crash, which happened on December 12, 2017. He resigned on January 4, 2018. 

Authorities say he was driving southbound on I-275 when he lost control and veered across the grassy median, into the northbound lanes. You could see tracks in the snow where his car veered onto the wrong side of the interstate. A bypasser's dashcam video recorded the moments before the crash. 

The crash killed two people inside the car, engaged couple Nicholas Pare and Shannon McInture, both in their early 30s and from Wayne, Mich.

Police say the two were killed instantly. Stack was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Authorities haven't yet elaborated on what caused Stack to veer on the wrong side of the road. 

He is due back in court April 27.
