Head-on collision after Super Bowl kills man in Shelby Township

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Officers are investigating after a 23-year-old man died from injuries sustained in a head-on collision with a woman who is suspected of driving drunk. 

Shelby Township police officers witnessed the crash while on patrol late Super Bowl Sunday.

"You almost feel, you feel helpless," said Lt. Jeff Daniel, Shelby Twp. police. "You'd like to help, that's why all of us first responders get into this line of work to try and do something and make a difference."

Police say early Monday morning, just after midnight, a Sterling Heights woman driving a 2012 Toyota Sienna minivan passed by officers near 21 Mile and Milonas at a high rate of speed. The 40-year-old driver plowed into another car, a 2005 Audi, head-on with a 23-year-old Shelby Township man inside.

"They rendered whatever aid they could," Daniel said. "I notified our fire dispatch that they will need their equipment for extraction."

Police say the female driver reeked of alcohol, along with the smell inside her car.

"It doesn't make any sense whatsoever," Daniel said.

And while she is expected to be okay, that young man, who had major injuries to his entire left side, later died in the hospital.

Shelby Township Police say this is the second deadly crash on Super Bowl Sunday in a row. Last year, a young woman was killed on Mound near 25 Mile.

Police say the victim ventured out onto the snowy roads late that night to get gas, preparing for his morning commute to work Monday.

"Somebody decided to have too much to drink and decided to drive," Daniel said.

Now, as police await toxicology results, they say that woman is expected to be charged with operating while intoxicated causing death.
