House explosion rocks neighborhood on Detroit's west side

Authorities are investigating an explosion at a house on Detroit's west side early Thursday morning.

A home in the 20000 block of Monica Street, which is near 8 Mile and Livernois, exploded in the middle of the night. Neighbors report hearing the blast around 3:30 a.m.

No one was injured, as the couple who lived in the home was at the hospital at the time.

"If it wasn't for them going to the hospital for my brother-in-law's issues, they just would've been in there. And I can't even imagine that," says Kay Muhammad, a sister of one of the homeowners.

Neighbors reported hearing the blast several blocks away, and parts of the home landed several houses down. A woman next door says her windows blew inward.

When firefighters got to the home, it was already completely leveled but was still burning. They worked to put out the fire.

"She just lost her dog - put her dog to sleep - and was going through missing her dog so this was like a double whammy. But, we're okay. I just don't know how to tell you; we're fine," Muhammad added.

Authorities believe at this time some sort of gas issue caused the explosion. Arson investigators have not yet confirmed the cause.
