Man charged in daughter's death, facing life in prison
(WJBK) - A 47-year-old father is facing life in prison after being arraigned on a number of charges Saturday in connection with the death of his 7-year-old daughter, Desandra.
Investigators say Wilburt Thomas was intoxicated and driving a van he stole from his employer last month when he got into an accident. His 7-year-old daughter was inside the van when he crashed into a disabled vehicle on I-94 in Romulus.
Thinking her father was dead, Desandra texted police and left the van.
As she was trying to get help, she was hit and killed on the interstate by another driver. Investigators have determined that driver will not be facing criminal charges.
Meanwhile, Thomas has been charged with child abuse; reckless driving causing death; driving under the influence; possession of marijuana and open intoxicants in the vehicle. In addition to all of that -- he's also facing a second-degree murder charge.
Bond was set at 1 million dollars’ cash surety 10%, but Thomas wanted to know if he could have a personal bond, which the judge did not hesitate to deny.
