Man with gun caught on camera ringing homeowner's doorbell

DETROIT (WJBK) - Outside a Detroit home where a stranger armed with a gun rang the doorbell and waited for someone to answer.

Police are trying to track him down and figure out if the Friday night incident was a dangerous prank, or something more sinister.

"When I saw the gun, I was totally blown away," said Dwana, the homeowner.

Doorbell camera footage shows the man Detroit police are looking for today, the man Dwana says stood on her porch holding a huge gun.

"It was very terrifying," she said. "Very concerning."

Dwana says just a couple of hours after she, her son and young granddaughter went to bed, the doorbell rang at her home on Asbury Street.

 "I thought hmm," she said. "And then he rang the doorbell a second time. At that point, I told my son stay in your room."

Police Chief James Craig weighed in on the incident.

"It’s 1:30 a.m. and a man with what appeared to be a high caliber weapon, exposed," Craig said.

Dwana says an app on her cell phone immediately alerted her.

"I thought he's holding something, but I couldn't tell what it was initially," she said.

Dwana says, she could also hear the man talking to someone.

"I heard him say there's a camera in the doorbell," Dwana said. "They were I guess, trying to see if there were any other cameras on the house."

That's when Dwana says, she watched the man cover up his face with his jacket and run off. Dwana called 911 and hit rewind.

"It wasn't until I went to play the recording back that I saw him approaching the house - and that is when I could clearly see the gun," she said.

Detroit police say the man seen in that video is a felon with a history of armed robbery and other crimes.

"We don't know why he chose that house," Craig said. "We don't know what his intentions were."

While Detroit police describe the second man as a black male wearing all black, they hope the clear photo of the armed suspect will help catch them both.

"They approached like they lived there," said Dwana. "They were not walking up to the house hesitantly."

Meanwhile, Dwana is staying elsewhere at least temporarily, and, thanking everyone who has called in with tips to police, so far.

"I've never had a security camera before," she said. "I never want to not have one now."
