Man's body found in Inkster driveway, people inside home taken for questioning

INKSTER, Mich. (WJBK) - A man's body was discovered in a driveway on Avondale Street in Inkster on Wednesday morning.

Police have identified the man as 49-year-old Louis Perry.

"Come on man -- he (does) everything for everybody," said Ondra Martin, a friend of the victim. "He cuts people's grass -- he (does) everything for everybody."

Friends and family have learned what happened to Perry -- a friend, a father, a handyman -- who was loved by many.

"I love this guy," Martin said. "This guy was my boy for life. We bonded at 11 or 12-years-old for life -- this is what they do to him? Come on."

Neighbors said they heard gunfire in the area overnight.

"It was around 3:38 this morning. Gunshots were fired -- it was multiple shots. I heard the victim was only shot three times but it was multiple. It was more than three times," said Anetria Carter.

Someone did call 911 to report shots fired near Avondale and John Daly, but the body wasn't discovered until a neighbor found him at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Inkster police did respond to a 911 call of gunfire in the area but there was no way for them to find him in their search.

"The residents who actually lived in the place, they didn't contact us at all. So the area the shooting was supposedly occurring at was very broad. Inkster did send units out here. They did search," Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. "It was 3, 4 in the morning. As you can see now -- in daylight -- it's pretty obvious to see where the victim was laying -- in the middle of the night without the street being lit up or anything like that, there's no way that the officers would have been able to walk through every house and see somebody."

The victim did not live at the home and it's not clear what he was doing here.

Three people inside the home were taken in for questioning. None of them called 911.

Investigators were on scene to comfort distraught relatives, the community action team sending chaplains to offer support.

"It's hard for families. Broken hearts. Upset, and so we just try to be there," said Alesia Thompson, an Inkster police chaplain.

Shaw said the violence is senseless.

"I don't understand sometimes," he said. "You get a gun in your hand it makes it easy I guess. You don't have to be a man about it to pull a trigger and shoot somebody from a long distance away."
