Mom of baby who fell through hole, drowned in sewage charged as habitual offender

DETROIT (WJBK) - The mother of a baby who fell through a hole in a Detroit home and drowned in filthy standing water has been arraigned in the girl's death. We also found out she has previous felonies and has been charged as an habitual offender.

Ca'mya Davis died July 6 in the basement of the family's home in the 15000 block of Ferguson. According to police, the baby's mother, Dasiah Jordan, left the house to get her hair done. She left her baby along with her 10-year-old in the care of babysitters who were on their way to the home.

Baby girl drowns after falling through hole in home's floor

Dasiah Jordan was arraigned on Tuesday in a Wayne County Court on manslaughter and child abuse charges for the death of her 11-month-old girl.

The baby girl drowned after falling through the floor into a basement filled with standing water. Jordan and the homeowner, 28-year-old Tonya Peterson, were both charged with Ca'Mya's death. Jordan was arrested Monday night while Peterson is expected to be arraigned Wednesday morning.

"(She was) very happy, loved to smile. Loved to sing, loved to dance," said Jordan said last week. "(She) loved to play and eat."

Prosecutors say she left her daughter in the unsafe home and both Jordan and Peterson knew it was unsafe. The home is in a neighborhood with nicer homes and one neighbor said it wasn't always as bad as it is now.

"It was a nice house at first but then start moving in, moving out, moving then it started getting worse and worse," Roeshan Bently said.

During Tuesday's arraignment, the judge noted that Jordan had previous felonies and she was charged as an habitual offender. She was given a $25,000/10% bond.

Both Jordan and Peterson are being charged with manslaughter and child abuse in the girl's death.
