Mother of teen shot during Noel Night speaks out

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police are continuing the search for the person who fired a gun during Noel Night Saturday in Midtown, injuring four teens. 

The shooting happened near the Detroit Institute of Arts just before 8 p.m. The mother of one of the teens who was shot says her son heard an argument, then the shots. To protect the victim and his mother’s privacy, their identities have been concealed.

A 14-year-old male was shot in the left leg; a 17-year-old female was shot in the right leg; a 15-year-old male was shot in the right calf; and a 19-year-old victim was grazed on the right hand and lower leg.

“They stopped, turned and heard gun shots and started to run. He noticed himself limping, it was a hole in his pants,” she said. Her 14-year old son was realizing after the shots were fired that one of the bullets had hit him.

“His friend stuck his finger through the hole and it was blood so they picked him up and flagged a police car,” she said. “I did not know what to think I was just praying, I’m just thanking god that he's okay."

The 19-year-old victim said he saw the shooter pull a gun from his waistband and started shooting into the ground. 

The four teens shot range in age from 14-19. Police are still investigating, following up on leads and tips and reviewing surveillance video.
