MSU Board continues support for school president, asks for AG investigation

(WJBK) - The Board of Trustees at Michigan State University has requested the attorney general to investigate the university's handling of the Nassar situation. The eight-member board of trustees sent a letter to Bill Schuette Friday.

The board says only a review by Schuette can resolve questions in a way "that the victims, their families, and the public will deem satisfactory and that will help all those affected by Nassar's horrible crimes to heal."

Friday afternoon, FOX 2 learned that board was retaining Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon as the leader of the university.

Nassar won't be sentenced until next week to accommodate the many victims who want to speak. Since Tuesday, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina has listened to more than 70 who were molested after seeking his help for injuries. At latest count, 120 were expected to speak.

During these statements, the victims addressed Nassar and also criticized Michigan State and USA Gymnastics.

Michigan State President Simon attended part of the session Wednesday.

The school is being sued by dozens of women, who say campus officials wrote off complaints about the popular doctor. Many of the victims' statements claimed the university got wind of the assaults in the late '90s but no actions were taken against Nassar.

Four leading legislators in Lansing have called for Simon to resign or be fired by the board of trustees. On Thursday, the editorial board of university newspaper The State News included a front page design: "President Simon, Resign" with images of the victims, along with a lengthy editorial. 

The board is currently holding an unscheduled, closed-door meeting.
