Nassar in court for third sentencing, 65 survivors expected to speak

Larry Nasser returned to court Wednesday for his third sentencing for sexually assaulting young women at a prominent gym in Eaton County.

As court proceedings began this morning, prosecutors announced about 65 women are expected to speak.

Nassar, a former Olympic and Michigan State doctor, was sentenced last week to 40 to 175 years in prison. During a seven-day hearing, more than 150 survivors shared their stories of sexual abuse. Before than, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges.

Now Nassar is back in court for his final sentencing before Eaton County Circuit Court Judge Janice Cunningham for sexual abuse at Twistars, a gymnastics club in Dimondale, Mich., near East Lansing.

Some statements from the proceeding:

"I was sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar when I was 9 and 12 years old." - Jessica Thomashow.

"It takes a monster to sexually assault a child but it takes a monster backed by ego, experience and power fueled by multiple institutions to sexually assault a child in front of her own mother." - Tiffany Dutton.

"You quickly removed your hand from my pubic area and climbed off the table to stand and tell us if I was getting better or not. I don't remember what you said. I couldn't hear you. I thought it must have been an accident. Maybe your hand slipped. I must have imagined it. Just like I must have imagined the bulge in your pants as you walked around the exam table." - Katherine Ebert

In the Twistars case, Nassar pleaded guilty to three charges of criminal sexual conduct.

"We have over 265 identified victims and an infinite number of victims in this state, in the country, and all over the world," said Judge Janice Cunningham.

The judge has set aside four days for sentencing. And like the Ingham County sentence, Nasser agreed that the judge will have discretion in setting the minimum number of years in prison, that being 25 to 40.
