NWS: Possible tornado reported in Monroe County

The National Weather Service reports a possible tornado touched down in Monroe County Tuesday night.

Storm Spotter reports that three houses were severely damage and left uninhabitable near Toben Road and South Stoney Creek Road. In that area, you can see homes missing parts of their roofs and siding, toppled trees and damaged cars.

Surveyors from the National Weather Service are expected Wednesday to be in Frenchtown Township and Berlin Township, as well as possibly Gibraltar in Wayne County, to try and confirm if all this damage was, in fact, from a tornado. They'll also look at if the same tornado passed through, or if it was a series of them.

A couple in Frenchtown Township, the area which appears to have the most significant damage, says they felt a circular motion of wind and that things in their yard are in a totally different direction.

"You could hear, like, the sounds of a jet engine, just whirring," says Don Marcero. "It makes that turbine sound and I said, we got to go. So we headed to the basement and we were probably in there no more than 15 seconds and you could just hear it hit. You could hear the trees popping, stuff hitting the house. I mean, it was really quick, no more than a minute. One minute and it was just gone."

In Gibraltar, several homes were also damaged. Near Navarre and Marr streets, a trampoline was swept up and tangled in some power lines.

Tornado warnings were issued for southern Wayne County and northeastern Monroe County, and a band of severe weather was expected until midnight.
