Robbery, attempted rape at Opera House parking garage downtown Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) - A suspect robbed and attempted to rape a 61-year-old woman Monday night in the Detroit Opera House parking structure in downtown Detroit, according to police. The suspect has since turned himself in. 

The woman was on the fifth floor of the parking structure around 11:30 p.m. when she was approached from behind, officials say. The suspect placed a hard object to her head and forced her into her vehicle, where he attempted to rape her in the back seat.

As the woman screamed for help, the suspect took her cell phone and ran. 

Several police officers arrived on scene and the woman was taken away in an ambulance around midnight. She suffered facial bruises and possibly a broken finger.

UPDATE: According to police, suspect Darius Jackson turned himself just before 2:30 a.m. He was charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, second-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault and felony firearm.

Jackson is due in court again on March 8.

The Michigan Opera House released a statement following the attack:

"We are deeply troubled about the altercation that occurred last night at the Detroit Opera House Parking Center. The safety of those who use our facilities is of the utmost importance to us at Michigan Opera Theatre. 

Our parking garage has 24-hour on-site security and surveillance, and we regularly review our security measures. We have been in the process of employing an expanded video surveillance system, which will be fully- implemented within the next few weeks. 

We are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident to determine any further security improvements that should be made. We express our heartfelt concern to the individual that was harmed in the incident."
