Sewage appears on Southfield, no idea where it came from

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - It was a crappy situation. It smelled, it reeked, it seemingly appeared from nowhere. Human excrement somehow spilled on a Detroit area freeway. But nobody seems to know where it came from.

M39 opened just before 5 p.m. near I-94 in Allen Park, hours after the smelly scene spilled across the road. But who and how is still unknown.

"There was no truck, no vehicle, no driver to tell us what the material was," MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said. "We have to suspect the worst and treat all that as a hazmat." 

MDOT notified the Department of Environmental Quality who found a contractor to clean it up. Only then was it determined to human waste of all varieties.

"There's liquids and solids of some type," Cross said. "I guess there are different ways you treat different products."

The good news, if there is some, is that it wasn't raw sewage. It was treated sewage, which is somehow better, unless you had to clean it up.

"I would imagine nobody would've liked to have that job today," Cross said.

The crews cleaned up the number one and number two quickly and the road opened a little before 5 p.m.
