Woman killed when driver fleeing Detroit police crashes into garage
DETROIT (WJBK) - A woman was killed when a driver fleeing Detroit police crashed into a stranger's garage.
The 26-year-old was riding with a 42-year-old male driver when police tried to pull over the vehicle at East Warren and University Place. The driver took off.
Police say the driver hit their cruiser, sped off, and hit a utility pole before crashing into a garage on University and Chester. The woman suffered a neck injury in the crash and died later at the hospital. The driver is now under arrest.
"I just heard this tremendous loud crash, like something was crackling, and I jumped then I heard something go boom," says Sheena Jarmon, a neighbor. She woke up and ran outside to see what had happened -- and saw the green Chrysler 300 smashed into her neighbor's garage.
"It had literally impacted itself in the garage up there, in the concrete," she says.
Police say they were responding to reports of a man with a gun, and that the driver's car matched the description. Police say they recovered a gun from his car before he was arrested.
The crash also downed some power lines on the lawn, which crews were able to clean up before anyone else got hurt.
