Young woman left disabled by shooting gets custom house

A Detroit girl's life was changed forever when she was wounded by a gang's bullet.

Dreia Davis was just 13 at the time. Now at 19, she's in school and making strides and help is on the way.

A father's love for his child has kept their family going.

Chad Audi took FOX 2 on a tour of the home that Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is retrofitting so it will be wheelchair accessible for a special young woman.

"We'll keep the stairway and we'll put a ramp right next to it," Audi said.

"I think it's beautiful," said her father, Curtis White. "It's a dream come true. It's the first step toward her having complete independence and I'm happy for her."

In June FOX 2 reported about White and his 19-year-old daughter Dreia who was nearly killed - an innocent bystander just standing around talking to her friends when she was shot by a gang member.

"They said she wasn't going to make it," White said. "(They said) she would never move, she would never talk, she would never have a normal life. And I think we proved them wrong."

She made it alright, with the help of a father who would not give up.

Love is what keeps White literally picking his daughter up every day. Nothing about the house they rent is wheelchair accessible.

So Dreia's friend Keifer Stephens contacted FOX 2 asking if we could help. You bet.

A complete remodel is making a bathroom just for Dreia in this new home - doorways will be widened - and the house will be given to Dreia and her dad.

"All she keeps doing is fist-pumping and high-fiving," White said. "So if she's happy, I'm happy."

Everybody's happy to be a part of making life better for a family definitely in need.

"Very excited - it's going to be beautiful when we finish it," said one worker at the house.

"It's great," Audi said. "I mean, this is what we do and they're a very well deserving family."

"Never give up," White said. "That's the main thing. There's always somebody out there who cares more than you might think they do."

"It should be ready soon," Audi said.
