(WJBK) - Beans & Cornbread Soulful Bistro is serving up lunch with a history lesson this Black History Month.
Until 1965, Jim Crow laws made travel extremely difficult and dangerous for black people in the south. They were refused service in restaurants, or couldn't use the dining car on a train, so women prepared meals and packed them in old shoe boxes. The lunches usually consisted of boiled eggs, pound cake, fruit, sandwiches and almost always, fried chicken.
Beans & Cornbread created their own boxed lunch with food that mimics this Jim Crow era.
During Black History month, the shoeboxes will be available for $1 with the purchase of a lunch or dinner entree. Ten percent of all proceeds will be donated to Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation to support its youth education programs.
