(WJBK) - The City of Detroit is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Spirit of Detroit.
Joining FOX 2 to share more about the history of the iconic statue a big celebration happening Friday is Sharon Madison, commission chair of the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority.
The Spirit of Detroit was commissioned by the DWJBA in 1955 and dedicated September 1958.
Internationally renowned sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks was commissioned by the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority to create a sculpture for the city to represent hope, progress, and the "spirit of man."
The anniversary celebration is free and open to the public from noon to 2:30 p.m. in front of the Spirit of Detroit sculpture at 2 Woodward Ave.
