(WJBK) - The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn offers a one-of-a-kind tour not found at most other museums -- one that takes you plucks you from museum rooms and right into the streets, immersed in Arab American culture.
The tour is called Yalla Eat!, which is Arabic for "let's go eat." It's a guided walking tour through Dearborn that visits family-run businesses, such as bakeries, coffee houses and produce markets. Traditional Arabic hospitality is on full display -- as well as generous samples.
It is a great way to get to know the Arab culture that's right in our backyard. Thousands of Arab Americans live in Dearborn.
The museum offers two different Yalla Eat! tours, one along Michigan Avenue and one along Warren Avenue. The tours run on Saturdays in the warmer months and are very popular. They're already sold out for 2017. In the cooler months the Yalla Eat! program serves up curated meals. They have a Taste of Yemen meal coming up on Friday, November 10, 2017. You can learn more about that meal here. The Yalla Eat! walking tours will pick back up in April of 2018.
Tour guide Nourhan Mattar joined us in studio to tell us more about the tours. You can hear from her in the video player above.
Chef Layla Outita also joined us to tell us more about Arab food, and to show us how to prepare a lamb tagine. Click here for her recipe.
