Figure Skating in Detroit nonprofit coming to the city

(WJBK) - Figure skating is a beautiful and elegant sport, but also a very expensive activity that not all families can afford. Which is a shame, because skating offers so much exercise, discipline and empowerment.

The Figure Skating in Harlem youth development program is expanding to Detroit. The program will be led by Geneva Williams.

The program plans to serve 300 Detroit girls ages six to 15 through special community workshops, summer camps, skating shows and events and ICE (I Can Excel), a signature after-school program where girls will receive four-to-six afternoons weekly of skating instruction and off-ice conditioning and educational services at the Jack Adams Arena in northwest Detroit. The program will also use the ice rinks and facilities at Campus Martius and the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Twp., and is looking forward to the completion of the new Little Caesars Arena for future use.
