2 teens in custody after police chase, crash in Eastpointe
The vehicle spun around and crashed while attempting to use an exit ramp to leave the highway, Eastpointe police said. The minors began fleeing on foot; two were arrested while one escaped.
EASTPOINTE, Mich. (FOX 2) - The driver of a stolen vehicle lost control of it and crashed after excessively speeding to escape police in Eastpointe. The driver and two passengers were all minors.
The incident took place early Sunday morning, around 5:30 a.m.
Officers spotted a 2015 white Jeep Grand Cherokee that lacked a license plate and had a broken back window with a plastic bag covering it, near Eight Mile and Cushing.
"These vehicles are commonly stolen," said Eastpointe Lt. Alexander Holish.
A police chase ensued and continued onto I-94. At times, the 16-year-old driver was going over 100 mph in an effort to flee from officers.
The driver struck a curb while attempting to exit the highway onto Cadieux Road, Eastpointe police said. The vehicle sustained damage to the two front tires and spun out, coming to a halt on the exit ramp.
The occupants of the stolen vehicle got out and tried to flee on foot; two were arrested while one escaped.
"The rear seat passenger attempted to get out of the vehicle but was taken immediately into custody before he could get out of the car," Holish said. "The front seat passenger was not apprehended. He was able to get away. The driver attempted to hide in a vacant garage. Officers spotted him and were able to take him into custody."
Police are still searching for the third suspect.
"I’m confident we will be able to identify him soon," Holish said.
Officers have had prior contact with the 16-year-old driver from Detroit for similar incidents, according to police.
The case will be sent to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s office for review.
