Detroit police are investigating after a 2-year-old child was shot Tuesday morning.

Big picture view:

The child is listed in critical condition, according to Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.

"I believe the child is going to survive," he said. "But at the same time, its' trauma is tragic."

Bettison said it is another case of an unsecured firearm inside a residence, adding the firearm is registered to the mother.

Dig deeper:

The incident happened at about 8 a.m. at a residence in the 12900 block of Evergreen near I-96.

The child's mother was cooking breakfast and heard a loud pop sound and discovered her child shot.

"My heart goes out to the mother because she is in tremendous pain," he said.

A 4-year-old sibling was also inside the home at the time but was not injured.

"The message to parents is to secure your firearms," he said. "Whether it's a gun lock, a gun safe, it is your responsibility to secure your weapons. And if you don't, you'll be held accountable."

Bettison said gun locks are free at Detroit police stations, specifically the Sixth Precinct on Warwick near Plymouth.
