20-year-old fatally shot by Royal Oak Police after domestic incident
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - Royal Oak Police have shot and killed a man who claimed to have stabbed his mother and then rushed towards police after being ordered to the ground.
Police were called to a home in the 1000 block of Hoffman just after 3 a.m. for a domestic assault involving 20-year-old Cody Reynolds of Royal Oak.
Police say the 911 caller stated she had been stabbed by her son, and that the son had also hit his father in the head with a guitar.
Police say when they got to the scene, they saw Reynolds walking and ordered him to stop. They say he told them he had stabbed his mother, and then began to approach the officers. According to police, he then abruptly got on the ground, but quickly rushed towards the officers in an aggressive manner. One officer fired at Reynolds and he was hit.
You can see dashcam video from the incident in the video player above.
Officers say they immediately began to administer aid to Reynolds, and then he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His parents were also taken to the hospital but police say their injuries aren't serious.
Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue said four casings were found at the scene, and that Reynolds did not have a weapon on him.
Neighbors told us they woke up to the sound of gunshots, and then saw a man lying in the street.
This is the second police-involved fatal shooting for the Royal Oak Police Department this year. Back in April, a man fleeing a traffic stop was shot and killed by a Royal Oak police officer while he was in a drive thru at White Castle. Details about that incident have been scarce.
O'Donohue was asked about this shooting in his press conference Monday morning, but said he still couldn't provide any other details about this because the investigation isn't completed yet.
Both Royal Oak police officers involved in the two separate shootings are on administrative leave, per standard procedure.
Also, over the weekend, police in Dearborn Heights were involved in a fatal shooting as well. Police say they were doing a welfare check when a man approached the officers with a rifle, and was fatally shot. Michigan State Police are investigating.
