A Tuesday morning fire seemed to take everyone by surprise.

“It didn't start as a big fire, it was just smoke and we didn’t think it was going to be a big deal,” said Iliana Como of Violeta’s Tailoring.

It was a big deal. Witnesses say it appears the fire started on the roof the strip mall in the 1900 block of King Road in Trenton.

“There were like, five people working on the roof and a customer came in, we went outside and we saw huge smoke,” said Como.

Herb Garden Café, Violeta’s Tailoring, and Heritage Cleaners were all destroyed in the fire.

Firefighters from Trenton, Brownstown Township, and Riverview worked together to battle the blaze.

“It breaks my heart, because you go in there and you feel like family. It’s just a great place. Everybody knows everybody because they’re all local,” said Ron Bohn, a regular at Herb Garden Café.

Owners of Violeta’s Tailoring are trying to make sense of it all, while in shock and disbelief.

“We’ve been in the United States for 12 years, and we’ve been in this business for like 10 years now and it’s sad. We started from zero. We’re here now and we’re starting from zero again,” said Como, as she choked back tears.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
