A quiet subdivision woke up to the sound of gunshots Monday morning in Macomb. One man was killed and the 76-year-old grandfather of the victim's girlfriend has been arrested.

Deputies were called at 9 a.m. Monday to the home in the 45,000 block of Lone Pine Lane to a report of gunshots.

"I heard gunshots four times about a minute later, two more." Sokol Guraj told FOX 2's Ingrid Kelley.

By the time law enforcement arrived, they found the 31-year-old man lying in the snow in front of the home. Paramedics arrived and tried to keep him alive, but he died at the scene. The man police believe pulled the trigger is the grandfather of his girlfriend.

The reason for the shooting is still unknown, but Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says the victim was visiting one of the children.

"The victim has three children that reside in that home with their mother," said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. "He came over to have a visit with one of the children. When the 76-year-old exited the home armed with a handgun and, at some point, multiple shots were fired."

According to officials, the 76-year-old man is the grandfather of the woman and great-grandfather to the three children. He was arrested at the scene.

But they say he won't tell them what happened Monday morning.

"He is not making any statements so we don't know what was transpiring," Wickersham said.

Neighbors say the home was always a happy one and they're stunned by what happened Monday morning.

"He was always friendly," said one neighbor. "He would say hi to me. Every birthday he would wish me happy birthday. If we needed help he'd be the first to help out. He was just a really nice guy. This is really something we never expected."

Investigators want anyone in this neighborhood who heard or saw anything connected to the shooting, to give them a call.

"We have canvassed the area looking for independent witnesses," Wickersham said. "If there are any out there, please call the sheriff's office."
