78-year-old woman fatally struck by semi-truck after running red light in Sterling Heights

Vehicle involved in fatal crash on Mound Road

A 78-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by a semi-truck after running a red light, police said.

She was driving a silver Toyota Highlander just after noon on Tuesday when police say she was traveling eastbound on 17 Mile.

Police identified her as a resident of Sterling Heights.

At 12:50 p.m., she ran a red light at the intersection with Mound Road. Meanwhile, a semi-truck was traveling northbound on Mound Road.

As the woman drove through the intersection, she was struck by a semi-truck. 

The vehicle she was in suffered extensive front-end damage and scattered debris around the roadway.

Police shutdown the intersection for further investigation.

The clerk pursued the alleged shoplifter before shooting him. Police say the individual attempted to flee by jumping onto the Lodge Highway.
