ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) - You can now pay a visit to the restaurant that claims to have invented the buffalo wing without even leaving metro Detroit. The Anchor Bar is now open in Rochester Hills.
The original location opened way back in 1935 in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo wings were born there in the '60s.
Now Michigan has one of just 15 locations in North America, where you can try the "true chicken wing," as general manager Blanca Flores calls them.
"We have no other location here in Michigan. So, we have locations in Ontario and New York and we just recently opened one in Texas, so we want everyone to be able to try the true chicken wing - the best chicken wing, actually, in the world," she says.
Chris and Cheryl Ohlerts moved to Michigan four years ago, and were proud to report the wings in Rochester Hills were just as good as they remember in Buffalo.
You can order your wings in a variety of dry rubs or sauces. The Ohlerts say they always pick up the Anchor Bar sauces at the grocery store when they go back for visits, and are happy they can get a taste of home, now, in their new home.
Flores says her favorite is the lemon pepper dry rub, but the Ohlerts recommend just going for the original sauce.
If wings aren't your things, you could also go for the western New York favorite, beef on weck. It's a roast beef sandwich with a particular kind of bun -- a kimmelweck roll. It's a roll topped with kosher salt and caraway seeds, giving it a distinctive taste.
Anchor Bar has a family dining area as well as a sports bar. It's located on Rochester Road just north of Auburn.
