A suspect involved in a chase with police has died after being shot by Michigan State Police Friday afternoon.
The chase began with the suspect declaring he was a "sovereign citizen" at a traffic stop with Michigan State Police at Van Born and Telegraph in Taylor.
He then sped away and led the troopers on a chase. He later crashed after MSP performed two pit maneuvers near E. Huron River Drive and Haggerty in Van Buren Township at Lower Huron MetroPark.
He left the car with a gun out and took a shooting stance at police who opened fire and critically wounded him, said Lt. Mike Shaw, Michigan State Police. It is not known at this time how many shots were exhanged.
The lengthy car chase stretched onto portions of I-94, I-96 and I-275. One trooper was injured during one of the pit maneuvers.
