Detroit Police are continuing to investigate the sudden death of a baby at a home on Detroit's west side over the weekend.

Camaya Davis tragically drowned in their basement after falling through a hole in the floor. This happened just a couple weeks shy of her first birthday.

"(She was) very happy, loved to smile. Loved to sing, loved to dance," said Dasiah Jordan, her mother. "(She) loved to play and eat."

Like any 1-year-old child, Ca'mya loved to explore.

"I just bought her some shoes," Jordan said. "So she could get her balance but she can't walk. But she can hold on and walk along walls."

Against the wall in her mom's room was a hole where a vent should be. Next to that hole remains a baby bottle still half full of milk.

Baby Ca'mya lived with her two older siblings, ages 10 and 7, and their mom inside the home on Ferguson near Fenkell and Grand River. Jordan admits it is less than ideal conditions.

"This was my friend, her house, I have been staying here since April," she said. "I lived here for a couple months because I didn't have anywhere else to go. I didn't want to go to my dad's or my auntie's. I thought I could do it on my own."

It was the same friend who was allegedly watching the child when she fell down the hole into a flooded basement. FOX 2 shined a light inside that hole, finding garbage floating in filthy water at least six inches or maybe more.

When 1-year-old Ca'mya fell in, her mom wasn't home. Jordan told police she was getting her hair done and left her baby along with her 10-year-old in the care of babysitters.

"Two adults that I know of," Jordan said.

FOX 2: "Who are these people?"

"Friends," she said. "Like I said, friends."

The mother said she had no idea what had happened to her baby girl - until a series of text messages brought her to Sinai-Grace Hospital. That was when a doctor told her what happened to her child.

"First he asked me was the basement flooded," Jordan said. "That's when it hit me and I started crying. That's when he told me my baby had drowned in the basement."

While the mother wasn't home at the time, she says she knew about the hole and said the basement floods from time to time. Jordan said she would typically cover the hole in the floor herself with a Pack 'n Play.

"I don't know why it was uncovered or why she was in the room at that moment," Jordan said.

That is still being investigated by Detroit Police, although the medical examiner has listed the manner of death as an accidental drowning.
