Baby girl drowns in tub, Detroit police investigating

A baby girl drowns in the bathtub after her mother falls asleep in another room.

Now police are investigating the 1-year-old girl's death on Detroit's east side.

"They ran out with a baby dangling," said neighbor Jaylon Tubb. "The dude in the fire truck was just shaking his head. I knew something was bad."

"It was very heartbreaking," said a relative of the mother. "I was running out of the house to make sure it wasn't her, but I saw the news on the corner but when I saw my brother in law's number pop up on my phone - I knew it was her."

The woman does not want to be identified but says she is related to the child's mother through marriage

The incident is still under investigation but police say the mother of two children had fallen asleep. Her 4-year-old daughter then woke her up because she wet herself.

The mother filled a tub with bath water to clean the 4-year-old and once done, fell back to sleep. Soon awakened by her 4-year-old who alerted her that her 1-year-old sister was in the bathtub and not responding

"It hurts a lot because I actually I know the type of job she does and I know how tiresome it can be coming home late," said the relative. "(She was) still trying to provide and be a mom. I just know how tiresome it can be."

Those who know the mother say she is dedicated to her family and works hard to provide for her children.

"I know how hard she works all day and all night," the relative said. "And I can just see her being tired because she works really hard. She is a wonderful mom and a great person."

As family members try to bear the pain of this loss, they say they are supporting the mother and remembering the 1-year-old who died too soon

"She was gorgeous, like a doll," the family relative said. "A beautiful baby doll."
