Local veterans in need of comfort and support and animals in need of loving homes.
The Brownstown Animal Shelter is connecting the dots, with a special way of showing appreciation for those who've served.
Rigatoni, a happy 3-year-old boxer mix, is about to head to his forever home with Fred and Judy Miller. Fred, is one of many veterans taking advantage of the waived adoption fees for veterans, offered now at the Brownstown Animal Shelter.
Normally, adoption fees are $70 for dogs and $55 for cats. Shelter volunteers say the program is a win-win, for the shelter, and for veterans in need of a loving pet.
Some veterans who adopt are looking for a therapy animal, to help cope with the horrors they've seen.
Studies have shown over and over again, a pet like a dog or cat can reduce stress, especially for those dealing w/post-traumatic stress disorder.
The program has been a success, and now free pets for vets will now be offered year-round, until further notice. Fred says gestures like this are what truly make him proud to be an American.
