California developer says he'll revive Sugar Loaf ski resort
CEDAR, Mich. (AP) - A California developer says he's buying a northern Michigan ski resort that has been closed for 16 years.
Jeff Katofsky says he's never been to Sugar Loaf, northwest of Traverse City. But he's pledging to turn it into a year-round "high-end" resort, maybe in three to four years.
Katofsky talked about his plans in recent interviews with Michigan news organizations, although he was a bit vague. Sugar Loaf is in Cedar and once was the largest employer in Leelanau County. It includes a golf course, lodging and an airstrip.
Katofsky says Sugar Loaf has a "tremendous history" and a great location. Leelanau County already is popular during summer.
Some residents are skeptical. Andrew Pleva, who runs a meat shop in Cedar, says "nobody's holding their breath," especially after past failures.
