Canton police search for driver in deadly hit & run

Shannon Lesinsky is barely able to describe the pain of losing her father, Martin Lesinsky of Westland. 

"It feels like your heart is dead. Your heart stops pumping, you stop breathing. You look at your kids and you don't know what to tell them about papa," Lesinsky said.

She recognized her father's hat lying in the middle of Michigan Avenue in Canton Sunday evening and thought about her four siblings and the eight grandchildren he left behind.

"Papa Marty's is not coming home. Papa Marty is not going to be there for Christmas."

Canton police say just before six, the 54-year-old was crossing Michigan Avenue near Lotz Road with a friend of his - a 45-year-old man from Inkster.

“There's no cross walk there. It’s a dark, unlit intersection and it is very busy during the evening hours," said Lt. Pat Sullivan, Canton Police.

Police say a man driving a dark blue or black 2013 to 2016 Dodge Caravan slammed into her father. Police say after hitting the two men, the driver stopped and got out for a moment. Then he got back in his van and took off. A second vehicle hit Lesinsky and stopped.

A Ford Explorer hit Lesinsky's friend and stopped.

"I just wonder if he wouldn't have left if maybe he wouldn't be in so much trouble, and if my dad would still be alive," said Shannon Lesinsky.

Martin Lesinsky died in the road. His friend died later in the hospital.

“Witnesses describe (the driver who fled) as a Middle-Eastern male, 36-40 years of age, with short dark hair, clean shaven, and wearing a suit and red tie,” said Lt. Sullivan.

Police say the man’s van likely has front end damage. Police do not have surveillance video of the hit and run and they're depending on tips from the public.

Lesinsky's daughter is asking the driver to do the right thing.

"I would be totally willing to forgive if he could show face and come forward.”
