Carjack victim gets shot trying to fight back
DETROIT - Another violent carjacking at a Detroit gas station leaves a man shot.
The victim tried to stop two thieves from stealing his sport utility vehicle at about 3:30 a.m. at Valero gas station in the 15000 block of Schoolcraft. He is expected to survive but the suspects got away.
Just before 3:30 a.m. a 27-year-old man pulls into a Valero gas station in the 15000 block of Schoolcraft in Detroit.
The incident was captured on security video - the man left his vehicle running to go inside the station.
"I'm sure he thought it would be no harm," said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis, Detroit police. "It was a really quick stop into the store, but the suspect took that opportunity to enter his vehicle."
As the suspects start to drive off, the SUV owner decided to try and stop them, running to the driver side door and opening it.
"Unfortunately the suspect fired shots striking the victim," Lewis said. "He is in serious condition and is expected to survive."
Police say the suspects fled in the man's silver 2005 Ford Escape.
Lewis said the carjacking is a reminder that motorists should not leave a vehicle running when they leave it. Not even for a second.
"We have to do our due diligence to prevent crime of opportunities and that's pretty much what this was," Lewis said.

"When we get descriptions that are this vague it’s important that we pull video, speak to witnesses and canvas the area," Lewis said.
Police say the suspect took off in a silver 2005 Ford Escape.
