Cedar Point announces Steel Vengeance, Mean Streak's replacement

(WJBK) - Cedar Point has finally revealed details of the park's transformation of the Mean Streak. They held a "Hootenanny" in FrontierTown Wednesday to announce Steel Vengeance.

Jason McClure, Cedar Point Vice President, says Steel Vengeance is the first "hyper hybrid" rollercoaster in the world, creating a whole new classification of roller coaster. Steel Vengeance will also be the tallest, fastest and longest hybrid coaster. 

Steel Vengeance's smooth steel track on its wooden structure will take riders on maneuvers McClure says were never thought possible. Riders will drop on a record-breaking 90 degree angle, and go on four inversions.

"It's a very fitting ride for FrontierTown," McClure said, calling it their "little slice of the Wild West."

It's set to open in the spring of 2018.

Steel Vengeance measures in at 205 feet tall and 5,740 feet long, and clocks in at speeds of 74 mph. It also has the most airtime of any rollercoaster -- 27.2 seconds. The entire ride will last approximately 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

McClure says Steel Vengeance will undoubtedly give Maverick a run for its money and challenge its supremacy.

Park officials announced in August of 2016 it was saying goodbye the Mean Streak, which was once the tallest wooden coaster in the world. Riders had been long complaining of the ride's bumps and jerks.

Steel Vengeance is being constructed by the roller coaster engineers and builders at Rocky Mountain Construction, an Idaho company that specializes in the reconstruction and re-imagination of traditional wooden roller coasters.
