(WJBK) - Cedar Point's colossal wooden roller coaster, the Mean Streak, will be closing for good, the park announced Monday.
The 161 foot tall coaster screams by Lake Erie at 65 mph that includes a 155-foot drop, tall hills and rattling turns over 1.7 million board feet of wood. It was the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the world when it opened in 1991 in Frontier Town and features green, gold, and red trains with storm cloud and lightning bolts on their side.
"Mean Streak has, and always will be a significant part of our roller coaster legacy at Cedar Point," said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager for Cedar Point. "But we have our sights set on the future of FrontierTown, and unfortunately, that means Mean Streak has to leave our lineup of world-class attractions."
Mean Streak will permanently close the night of Friday, September 16. Guests and fans who want to pay their last respects can ride the coaster while the park is open daily through September 5. Then, the park reopens for special hours during a bonus weekend, Saturday & Sunday, September 10 & 11. Riders must be 48 inches tall to ride Mean Streak.
Finally, on September 16, the opening night of Cedar Point’s 20th HalloWeekends, the “last rites” will be given to the coaster with one final public riding session from 6 - 7 p.m. A special memorial ceremony and procession from FrontierTown to the park’s “Dead Rides Cemetery” will then take place at 7:30.
When the Mean Streak was built in 1991, it was the world tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster. It's 161 feet tall and tops at a speed of 65 mph.
Cedar Point says its making its way for "future development" in FrontierTown, but no other information was given at this time.
