Charges against suspect in murder of Wayne State officer dropped

DETROIT (WJBK) - Charges against the suspect in the fatal shooting of a Wayne State police officer will be dropped on Wednesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced.

In a brief press conference, Worthy announced charges against DeAngelo Davis would be dropped in the murder of WSU canine officer Collin Rose. You can watch a replay of the press on our YouTube page or on the FOX 2 Detroit Facebook page. 

"All murder charges against Deangelo Davis will be dismissed. He is no longer a suspect at this time," Worthy said.

She also said the police and Wayne County Prosecutor's Office have been working around the clock.

Worthy was joined by Detroit Police Chief James Craig and WSU Chief Anthony Holt.

Craig said that, even though an arrest was initially made, the investigation did not stop.

"Our investigators have literally been working around the clock," Craig said. "We are optimistic and we continue to ask for the public's help."

Davis was well-known to WSU police for previous run-ins with officers, but his mother told FOX 2 in a previous interview that he didn't do it. You can hear her interview in the video player above.

"I'm sorry that it happened to him, I'm not sorry - I apologize that it happened to (Rose)," she said. "But it wasn't my son. If he was on the other side, I would feel the same way about my family. You have to look at both sides. Both sides are bad. My son is going through all of this and he didn't do it."

The 29-year-old officer was investigating possible thefts of navigation systems from cars on Nov. 22 when he radioed that he was about to speak to someone on a bike. Rose was shot in the head during the stop at Brainard and Lincoln, an area off campus where Wayne State Police Chief Holt says many students and some officers live.
