Children physically unharmed after man killed in front of them in Wixom
WIXOM, Mich. (WJBK) - Police in Wixom say two young children were not hurt Friday when a woman shot and killed man in front of them.
Police said the man was shot in the head inside the Meadowood Park Apartment Friday morning. According to police, a 6-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were inside the apartment when the woman shot the man.
"This is just awful. Sad and awful," neighbor Wendy Tiye said. "That's scary. I'm pretty sure that's very scary for them."
The man was rushed to Botsford hospital where he later died from the gunshot wound.
"In spite of their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the area hospital," Wixom Police Lt. Ron Moore said.
The two children are half siblings of the victim and were unharmed. They were taken out of the home.
"Another very important element is to make sure that the children get to where they need to go, either with a parent or child protective services," Moore said.
A 37-year-old woman was taken into custody without incident. Neighbors said she was dating the 21-year-old victim and that they had seen and heard them fight.
Neighbors also said the man had been arrested often.
"It's always been commotion over there - police coming in and out and we just got used to it," neighbor Myracle Laney said.
"There's been several times I've seen the police come with the gentleman and there's always some commotion going on . I've seen him taken away in handcuffs a couple of times but this is the first time I've seen them take him away on a gurney," Tiye said.
Police cannot yet confirm whether or not there have been visits the home or any arrests. Other neighbors said the young man was friendly.
Police spent Friday searching the apartment and gathering evidence while trying to find the man's family.
"The police departments thoughts and prayers go out to the family of our shooting victim," Moore said.
