Christmas comes early for family in need - thanks to FOX 2 viewers
DETROIT (WJBK) - A child's request for her family to be "adopted" for Christmas goes viral on the FOX 2 Facebook page.
Christmas comes early for the Evans family, all because of 12-year-old Lakyra - seeing her family struggling his holiday season. She took her mother's phone and posted on Facebook, asking if someone could adopt her family for Christmas.
"Christmas is coming up and we had too much on our hands - we need help," she said one week ago.
Generous viewers immediately donated beds and other furniture - then more people pitched in - collecting so many coats, boots, gloves and scarves. Donations of clothes, pajamas, toys and sheets for the new beds also poured in. Items FOX 2 has been delivering for the past couple of days.
Eight-year-old Nahima was especially happy to have so many new clothes - so the kids at school won't make fun of her.
"They would call me a bum, I wear the same clothes every time," she said.
FOX 2: "That's not nice."
"Nope," Nahima said.
But Christmas is a time for nice and it's exactly what this family has been given.
FOX 2: "Everyone just wanted you to have a nice, warm, happy Christmas. Do you think that's going to happen?"
"I think that's already happened," said Lakyra.
Things are looking up for the family. Latisha Evans says she's in the process of getting the gas turned back on at her home - and she's so grateful for the outpouring of support.
"I appreciate everything and everybody's help," she said. "All the kind hearts, all the generousity - if my kids can't fit in something, I will pass it along to the next ones who need it."
"Thank you, God will bless you all, and a Merry Christmas," said Lakyra.
She got one thanks to our FOX 2 viewers and Rev. W.J. Rideout - who helped us - help a child with a Christmas wish.
"This is the most exciting time of the year for a 12-year-old as smart, bright and beautiful as she is and to reach out to FOX 2 and the community, that's amazing," Rideout said.
