Mayor Mike Duggan announced Thursday morning the city is extending the contract for Police Chief Chief James Craig through 2017.

The mayor held a news conference with members of the Detroit Police Department. Duggan said he's impressed with what Craig has done for the city, and wants that good work to continue. He says emergency response time went from 37 minutes to 16 minutes since Craig took over the department.

Duggan added this was a unanimous decision by the council, prosecutor and police union. Craig's salary will be the same as he had before: $225,000.

A clause in the contract states if Craig decides to relocate, he must pay out the remainder of his contract. Duggan says, in 2017, the contract will automatically renew if nobody objects.
