Police being called heroes after rescuing man from icy pond

Police were screaming at the top of their lungs for the man to open the door or get out of the window, hoping the man in the car could hear them.

Police officers in Clinton Township are being called heroes after saving a man's life from the icy waters of a pond.

Officer Celeste Smith was called to a freezing pond at the Harbours Apartments at 1:50 a.m. on New Year's Eve where a car was sinking into the cold water.

Police were screaming at the top of their lungs for the man to open the door or get out of the window, hoping the man in the car could hear them.

Smith was on the other side of the pond where she told her team to go to the other side to better access the vehicle.

Sgt. Ryan Bates said he took off his gear and got into the cold water, holding onto a rope anchored by officers on and near the shore.

Once the driver was out, Bates put the life vest under his arm and started swimming back to shore with the rope pulling them in.

Bates says the driver was then treated and is doing okay. He applauded his team for trusting one another to save the man's life.

An investigation is ongoing as to how and why the vehicle was in the water.

Bates not only credits his team for working together but also for each of their patrol vehicles having a life jacket and rope in them.
