CMU murder suspect's Chicago community: 'They were a loving family'

The Central Michigan shooting has rattled the suburban Chicago community where in the suspect grew up.

Logan Ludy played basketball in high school with the suspected shooter, 19-year-old James Davis Jr. 

"Just from knowing him for a brief time, I didn't think that would happen," he said. "It is unbelievable."

Friends say Davis was quiet, polite and kind, the product of a good family.

"It's unbelievable to tell you the truth," Logan said. "I didn't know something like that could happen to somebody I knew."

The Leal family spent a lot of time with the Davis family - the suspected shooter, James, and his parents, also the alleged victims in the shooting.

Father James Eric Davis Sr. and 47-year-old Diva. Neighbors say she was a flight attendant and a wonderful mother, James was retired from the military work as a part-time police officer for 20 years in west suburban Bellwood, his home town. 

"They were a loving, close family, and they were really proud of him going to college," said Juan Leal.
