Dearborn Heights school honors teen football player who drowned

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - A Dearborn Heights high school honored a 15-year-old student who drowned just a few months ago.

There wasn't a dry eye at Star International Academy Thursday as it honored fallen student athlete 15-year-old Mohamed Wutwut. The school retired his jersey number 79.

He drowned in Cass Lake last July in a tragic swimming accident. Those who knew him say he was a young man of character.

"He was an amazing example for our students," said Supt. Nawal Hamadeh. "He really cared for each and every one of them. He pushed them to do their best."

"Just overall, his character was just phenomenal," said Ali Bazzi, the principal of Star International Academy. "Things we really hope our children kind take from him. He always wanted to stand up to bullies. He would always would be the cheerleader for everybody else in his class and even on the football field."

Tonight his friends and teammates came up short against Detroit Public Safety Academy - but everyone there was moved with the tribute when they honored 15-year-old Mohammed Wutwut.
