Dearborn police officer charged with sex crime

Shocking allegations against a member of the Dearborn Police Department.

In May it was alleged a police officer groped a woman during a traffic stop.

In June Police Chief Ronald Haddad acknowledged the officer was suspended without pay and an investigation was under way. Now FOX 2 has learned he has been formally charged.

Justin Smith, 36, was charged with a felony, criminal sexual conduct, second degree.

The court file is currently suppressed at the request of the prosecutor and we're still waiting for a formal statement from the police as well as the city of Dearborn.

FOX 2 has learned Smith and the victim knew each other but the details of the allegations against him have not been made public. As mentioned, he is currently suspended without pay. he is due back in court Friday for a probable cause conference.

We are expecting a statement from the department sometime Tuesday.
