DETROIT (WJBK) - Next month a Detroit airport will be home to the city's first-ever organized and legal drag-racing event.
"It's a perfect scenario for everything, honestly. Plenty of room, don't have to worry about nothing, and gets people away from the streets," said event participant Chad Anselmi.
The Motor City Showdown is coming to Detroit in September, and you will see two drivers in each race go for it all on a 660-foot stretch of runway at the Coleman A. Young International Airport on the city's east side.
"As a Detroit native, there was the epicenter of illegal street racing right there on the other side of those gates, which is off French Road. So this is the personification of showcasing not that aspect, but showing it legit, organized with vehicles that were custom built that have the appropriate safety equipment with each one of these drivers that's qualified and have been doing this for many years," said Brian Olatunji, professional racer and event organizer.
An inspiring story, Anselmi was involved in car accident in 2000 not related to car racing that left him paralyzed.
"No matter what traumatic things you go through in life or your situation that you can still do the things you love," he said.
Anselmi may no longer have the ability to walk, but he is still able to driver like the other racers.
"They made it possible for me to hit the Trans rig button, the line lock, my parachute is right there -- everything is all right there within reach," he said.
There will be 32 drivers in all on the runway come September 23, so if you have a love for racing, come out and enjoy. It's expected to be a fun, family event.
