ROMULUS, Mich. (FOX 2) - Ice and snow have caused a closure at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.
A spokesperson with the airport said in a statement Tuesday night:
"For several hours, maintenance crews actively treated the airfield. However, the constant rate of precipitation has diluted the de-icing fluid, causing it to be ineffective. Based on the weather forecast, it is possible that DTW will remain closed (no arrivals/departures) overnight.
"Crews remain on the airfield working to prepare the surfaces to reopen. Customers are encouraged to contact their airline before heading to the airport. More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available."
Freezing rain will continue across southeast Michigan and according to the National Weather Service, could pick up in intensity after 11 p.m. with some locations getting a tenth of an inch of glaze.
Some light snow or sleet may mix in with the freezing rain, especially around the M-59 corridor.
Stay with FOX 2 for more information as it becomes available.
UPDATE: Operations at the airport began to resume around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
